Bounty Hunter Lone Star

Bounty Hunter Lone Star

The Lone Star is very affordable and comes with only three, simple operating modes. Like many Bounty Hunter products, this detector features a submersible 8” searchcoil. This is possible thanks to Bounty Hunters renowned BOUNTY D-Tech search coils.

The model we're featuring comes standard with an 8" open-face, waterproof coil. Both larger and smaller coils are available in the accessories area for this metal detector, but the 8" is a great place to start. This searchcoil is versatile and deep-seeking, making it effective for any type of detecting. Because it is waterproof, you can submerge this coil into water without any adverse affect on the operation of the detector – this is perfect for hunting in the shallow waters of beaches and rivers, as well as on land!

To hold your target steady, the Sharp Shooter II comes standard with an S-Rod Handle System made of anodized black aluminum which adjusts for most heights. The forearm cup keeps your grip steady and comfortable as you swing the searchcoil over almost any terrain, and Bounty Hunter also includes an S-Rod Stand below the armrest to keep your Sharp Shooter II off the ground and out of your hands while you dig.

The Bounty Hunter Lone Star also features the "Three-Tone Audio Discrimination," which will alert you to different treasures with different tones. Because it has a 1/4" headphone jack on the control panel, almost any stereo-type headphones can be used with the Quick Draw II.

The three operations modes are completely adjustable thanks to the touch pad selection and sensitivity adjustment. The Quick Draw II also features a Three Level Iron Adjustment to allow you to tune out items such as small nails or bottle caps while still detecting relics and treasure!

Got it at Christmas, waiting for spring to try it out. It seems like it should be a good detector, many features for a very good price. I hope I can find some interesting treasures with it. I'm hoping to use it at the beach and in parks around town.

I have been detecting for approx 4 years, and the Bounty Hunter Lone Star was my second detector. Given the time I have to spend detecting and the sites available, I chose a reasonable detector with nice features. I started out on playgrounds and raked in the coins and a few pieces of nice jewelry.

At the time of purchase, this detector had features that other brands carried only on higher end units. I greatly appreciated the upgrade from the my previous detector. The controls are easy to manipulate and understand. With a little trial and error using the features and scanning technique, it was easy to learn when to dig and when to move on.

I like hunting relics and coins, and this detector works great. With a few distinguishing passes, you can determine jewelry from junk, and coins from cans. I have found some interesting settler sites and pieces from horse buggies. It is easy enough to use for a beginner. Yet has the features to make it desirable to an intermediate user.

This detector has what it takes to keep your interest, and will not just gather dust. And if you choose to upgrade later, you will probably still want to keep this one around - for playing, practice and fun. It is also a durable unit with an adjustable shaft that would make a great gift for a new hunter.

I picked up mine with a Kellyco package that included a nice bag. I have found this to be very useful in keeping the unit safe while traveling. It also has pockets and room for a few necessary tools and pouches for the finds.

I rate this Metal Detector a five for Fun, Features, and Finds!

Having over 38 years of metal detecting experience still did not prepare me for the surprise I received the first I took the Bounty Hunter Lone Star out for a spin.

I started out in the early 70's with a Sears Ted Williams (Coinmaster) that I used until 2002 when I retired it for a more advanced model. Just a few months ago, I was scanning through a classified ad and saw a Bounty Hunter Lone Star listed for $35.

I sure couldn't pass that deal up, even though I was kind of skeptical of the manufacturer and its performance. This little machine seemed like a toy when comparing material quality to my other detectors. The rods don't have cam-locks and have some wiggle in them and the coil wire connection is a push plug but overall it's sturdy enough, light and well balanced.

This detector has a 8-1/2" spider coil, three modes of operation, all-metal, disc and auto-notch and a 6 segment visual target ID. It also has a three tone audio ID in disc and auto-notch modes. I had become tired of digging corroded zinc cents with my other units but was able to ID these with their mid-tone signal and visual ID.

When I performed a bench trial against my other units the depth was only 1/2" to 1" less on some targets and just a deep on others. Ranges were 5" on dimes and small jewelry to 7" on quarters and large gold jewelry. Even though the unit has now pin-point feature target location is easy using a quick X-ing motion of the coil.

The signal response is sharp and signal recovery speed is very quick, a plus for hunting in high trash areas. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised. This unit performed very well for a detector that retails for around $150, and would be a great beginners unit. Picking it up for $35 was a steal. I even made my best find with it, a 14K, 1/3 carat princess cut diamond ring.

The REASON FOR THE BOUNTY HUNTER LONE STAR? A spur of the moment splurge in a sporting store. I was in the market for one and was thinking seriously about getting a MD for the fun of it. I saw this one as a left over Christmas promotion.

THE FEATURES: For a novice like me I was thrilled when got it home and assembled in less than 15 minutes and a very quick glance at the book and controls I thought I was ready. I went to the yard and knew there were pennies everywhere from the previous owners. I turned the unit on and set it for all metals. Soon I found some scrap aluminum. Then a penny, then more pennies, I set it to discriminate all the metal but coins.

In less than 30 minutes hunting I had collected close to 25 coins, Wowwwwww! Then to the park and in no time picked up some scrap, a few pop tops, some coins, then a ring no less. On my second try at using this amazing machine, with no formal instruction. The wife was watching and laughing at me digging like an animal in the dirt on the playground. After picking a few more coins I gave it to her. She never has had a MD in her hands till that moment, on with the headphones and walked about 15 paces and picked up an old toy ring . She is hooked I had to go and get another MD now so both of us could be out in the fresh air and enjoy a new hobby together

We went together at an old fair grounds from what I could remember when a kid . She took the Bounty Hunter and I took the Ace, in just a few steps she had a 25 cent piece, me nothing , anther few feet and she had a couple of pop tops. Then it was my turn , a penny spotted with the ACE.. All in all it was a good day in the park for both of us , me with some time on the Bounty Hunter and using the ACE and her with no experience using the Bounty Hunter for the second time.
EASE of use, it was just described. For the beginner, turn it on and start detecting no settings, only a LCD showing what the item is, where? Very easy to PP using the X method. Very precise and on the dot location and usually its what the LCD says it is.

At the beginning it was an entry level detector for me at a nominal cost. It is a full feature (at least I think so as a beginner) ONLY an experienced hunter would want to tweak the dials to get more out of it knowing what they are looking for. As time goes on we will be the more experienced and tweaking to get the most out of it, Right now its perfect for the wife.

This is a very light easily carried ergonomically designed unit for anyone to use. I have now the ACE 250 for which most consider a great machine. But the wife can out find more than me with the Bounty Hunter
Being new to the hobby, and a new novice but finding what has been found in a short time by both of us and the wife being even new at it than me I would have to give this machine a good strong 4 stars, not really knowing what a 5 star machine would be.

Recommend it to someone, a very strong yes for someone wanting a low priced first time machine. A very good one at that!

Being a seasoned detectorist, with over 35 years of experience, left me a little skeptical the first time I used the Bounty Hunter Lone Star.

I happened upon one in a classified ad for $35 and really only bought it because it was such a good price for a unit that retails for close to $200. However, I was quite surprised to find it is a great little machine. My first impressions though, upon assembling the unit, seemed to confirm my suspicion that this was not much more than a beginner's, inexpensive unit. The materials seemed cheap and the design and craftsmanship were also lacking. But once assembled it was confortable enough but the lack of cam-locks on the shaft did allow for some shaft wobble.

This unit has 2 controls knobs: sensitivity and discrimination, 3 search modes: all-metal. disc. and auto-notch, a bar scale target I.D. and low battery indicator. There is no depth indicator or pin-point mode. The all-metal mode produces a single tone while disc. and auto-notch enable a 3 tone I.D. response. After reading through the instructions, I performed a few bench test to get a feel for the responses and depth limits of various coins and pieces of jewelry.

I was surprised to find that the depth measurements I made were only 1/2" to 1" less than my top of the line unit from a well known manufacturer, ranging from a dime at about 5" to a quarter at 7". Finally I went to a local park to put the Lone Star through the paces in my normal hunting conditions. I began in disc. mode and found the response to be quick and the target I.D. fairly accurate. Using the stock 8" spider coil, the unit pin-pointed easy enough, even though it has no pin-point feature. A quick X of the target until I received a double beep in both directions confirmed target center.

I then switched to auto-notch and found that most junk items, including pull-tabs were discriminated out or produced a broken signal, while still responding to nickels. The only problem I encountered though was I did not find much difference in the notch window location when adjusting the disc. knob. Some trash items could not be notched out no matter how far I increased the discrimination. The target depths of finds were also a couple inches less than the bench test. My deepest find was about 4-1/2". A quick hunt at a local beach produced the same results as long as I stayed away from wet sand, where it got erratic.

All in all though, for a light weight, easy to use, turn-on-and-go machine I would recommend this unit, especially for a beginner, who may be concerned about initial invest cost.

The Bounty Hunter Lone Star is the first detector I have ever owned or used. I have enjoyed going out with the BH but for something so simple, it seems so complicated. I have had trouble with finding the targets once I start digging. The machine seems to find a lot of targets but I can't seem to locate it.

Inexperience probably, but I would like to get a new machine with a target pinpointer so I know when I am over the target. The BH is a great machine and it finds deep targets. It has found things that were 8 to 10 inches down. While I haven't found anything of historical or major value yet, I have found lots of things (aside from the usual trash targets) like coins, jewelry and even a piece of a meteor.

I have also taken my 8 year old daughter out detecting with me and she loves it. She got her own detector for Christmas and can't wait to get out and use it. Since the weather is warming up a bit here in PA, we will be heading out over the weekend to detect and get more practice on our machines.

I don't have a particular thing I like to detect for, I just like finding whatever the machine finds, knowing it is something that has been in the ground for years and the thrill of the possibility of finding something of historical value puts added excitement on detecting.

Getting out with my daughter and spending the quality time with her, and getting her involved with the history and research and other areas of detecting is a great feeling that one day I hope she carries on with her own children.

The Bounty Hunter Lone Star is a beginner level detector and usually sells for around $200. The control panel features two bars like LCD screens that point to the type of metal being detected and what mode you are detecting in. Also, on the control panel are two knobs. One is for sensitivity and the other is for discrimination. The Lone Star has 3 modes of detection including all-metal, discrimination, and auto notch.

The Lone Star is a great detector for someone who is just starting to detect or someone who doesn't have a lot of money to spend. It has simple controls that a fairly easy to perfect.

What I like about the Lone Star is that it is pretty good at weeding out junk like pull-tabs. The discrimination is pretty easy to use because all you have to do is turn the knob until you start getting finds. I also like the fact that the Lone Star, even though a beginner detector, still has very strong features like 3 tone audio. This helps you determine if you are detecting a piece of junk or a silver dollar. When you hear a low tone you know that it’s an iffy target. When you hear a louder, higher pitched tone, you know you've found something worth digging.

What I don't really like about the Lone Star is that it has no pinpointing feature like some other detectors around this price level. Also, I do not care for the battery life of this detector. Mine started dieing after about 4 hours of detecting.

With my Lone Star, I found a couple of pieces of jewelry (some silver.) Also, I found about 3 dollars in clad coins and some old relics.

The Lone Star is a good beginner detector that is cheap and will still find stuff. It’s lacking some features of other detectors in this price range but overall it’s a pretty decent detector. I would rate this detector 3 stars out of 5 because like I've said, its lacking some quality features.

I bought my Bounty Hunter Long Star metal detector a couple of years ago, and it has been an addiction to me ever since. I found so many items from gold rings to old coins and some relics. Every night before I go to sleep I think of where to go dig next time, or of what area I should go next time. Metal detecting has been so fascinating. I wish I had the money to upgrade my metal detector. I want to thank "Kellyco" for all those motivated email ads.

I'm new to metal detecting and my purchase of a Bounty Hunter Lone Star was made with the intention of searching the beaches for lost rings and jewelry. Also, I did not want to sink a lot of money into my purchase in case I did not use it very often.

I have been to the beach once and used it many times while there. I found many coins and bottle caps and a pair of sunglasses but no luck on the jewelry yet. Some of the coins were at least 6 inches deep and easy to pinpoint.

I liked using the Auto Notch mode which eliminated the pull tabs and trash but it did pick up the beer caps. At times I thought it was not working properly but then I would throw down a coin and it picked it up, I guess I thought it would beep more often but the metal just was not there. I'm looking forward to going and using it again and would recommend this one for the beginners like me because it is very easy.

I'm sure the experienced detectors could show me a thing or two with this detector. My son loved working with it too. My only complaint was my arm got sore but then I am out of shape. I believe I have a lot to learn about detecting but enjoyed it very much. There is no better way to get in shape than to get out there in the fresh air and enjoy some quiet time looking for some treasure.

I will not give up and after my first big find I will probably upgrade to a more advanced detector but for now this one works great.

We recommend the following accessories for this product:

Deluxe Full Size Carry Bag

Pinpointer

Pouch and Digging Trowel

Stereo Headphones

Cap
